So… what even is tarot?

A tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, divided into two groups: the Major Aracana and the Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards that represent big-picture themes and archetypes - turning points and transformations. These cards often signal major shifts or moments of clarity.

The Minor Arcana cover the more day-to-day themes and energies of life. They are divided into four suits representing four metaphysical elements (earth, air, fire, and water) though their names sometimes vary depending on the deck. Together, these cards explore our thoughts, emotions, impulses, and practical realities.

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck is the most recognizable and commonly used tarot deck, but there are many beautiful interpretations! I love selecting a deck that matches the mood of a question and the energy of a querent. Some decks are playful and whimsical, others rich with myth, folklore, or intricate symbolism. Each offers its own voice.

What’s Hearth & Spindle’s approach?

I use tarot as a tool for understanding - something to help you sort through your thoughts, reflect on your feelings, and explore the deeper stories you’re holding. When we see our inner world reflected back through the cards, it often brings surprising clarity.

Personally, I’ve always found that externalizing my thoughts helps me make sense of them. Seeing the cards laid out—each one carrying symbolism, story, and archetype—creates space to reframe a situation and see it from a fresh perspective.

At Hearth & Spindle, I use tarot to deconstruct and reimagine the stories we tell ourselves. I won’t tell you what’s going to happen, or what someone else is thinking, or exactly which steps to take. But I can offer a map. A mirror. A conversation. A new way of looking at things—so you can find your own path forward with more clarity and compassion.
